The Bahraini Red Crescent Society (BRCS), organized in cooperation with The Arab Red Crescent and Red Cross organization, an intensive training course entitled “General Disaster Management,” conducted by Coach Fathia Altoblani, which benefited 500 volunteers from various Red Cross and Red Crescent societies.
On the first day of the training course, Altoblani spoke about the meaning of disasters, their classification by occurrence and speed, how the six phases of the disaster fall on the society and how they are managed, stressing the importance of disaster preparedness, and following the objectives set by humanitarian organizations to prevent human casualties during disasters, how emergency situations are assessed and interventions organized by humanitarian organizations through the delivery and analysis of primary and secondary data while emphasizing the importance of training and preparing the volunteers to help the society in the time of need.
Altoblani reviewed in the second day the vital sectors most affected in emergencies which lead to greater humanitarian tragedies if they are not available, like the importance of food, how its shortage leads to malnutrition, emaciation, in addition to mass shelters, how they are constructed, and the keenness to give people places for temporary housing and build camps to accommodate the displaced and the affected.
Altoblani concluded the training course by affirming the need to provide psychosocial support to individuals who are subjected to psychological pressure and introversion as a result of the traumas they were exposed to during crisis and emergencies, and how the service providers must learn the principle of good listening, patience to try to help the individual to get rid of negative thoughts and adapt again to the new situation.
